New Fuel Efficiency Standards

The Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that it is raising the combined fuel efficiency standard for 2011 cars and trucks to 27.3 mpg, 2 miles per gallon above the 2010 average.

When was the last passenger car standard changed? Over 20 years ago!

What exactly is the new standard? All 2011 passenger cars must to meet 30.2 mpg. Trucks, SUVs and minivans must meet 24.1 mpg.

How much will it help the environment? The DOT says the increase will save 887 million gallons of fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by 8.3 million metric tons.

Is the the last increase we will see for awhile? The DOT is already working with the EPA to set future fuel efficiency rules combined with emission regulations through 2015, which will be released later this year. The administration is claiming it’s just the first in a series of more aggressive increases that will lead to meeting the 35 mpg standard by 2020 set by a 2007 energy law. Obama has promised that he will get the standard to 40 mpg by 2022.

Obama Signs New Conservation Bill

After spending a year working to get through Congress Obama signed a new conservation bill into law on Monday that protects 2 million acres of parks, rivers, streams, desert, forest and trails in California, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Virginia, West Virginia, New Mexico and Michigan. The bill passed the house with a vote of 285-140 with most of the opponents being Republicans who were upset that law did not allow access for oil and gas drilling on the land.

Earth Hour This Saturday

Earth Hour is Saturday March 28th at 8:30 pm local time!

Last year I participated in Earth Hour and I hope more people do this year too. Last year we went to our neighbors house and had a nice dinner by candlelight (we made sure our lights were out before we walked over to their house).

There are lots of fun things you can do for Earth Hour:

  • Have your friends over for a barbecue. Cooler full of drinks and a grill to cook the food, who needs electricity.
  • For those of us in the north light a fire in the fireplace, make smores and just enjoy the company of the ones you are with.
  • Have friends over and play board games by candlelight (or flashlight).
  • Camp out in the backyard.
  • If there is a planetarium near your home contact them. Many around the country are doing special star gazing events or go to for more information: http://stardate.org/nightsky/ or http://skymaps.com/downloads.html
  • Try and organize a neighborhood wide block party or barbecue and get everyone to shut off their lights. It would be a good way to get to know your neighbors right!
  • You could use the time to change all the light-bulbs if you have not done so already or make other energy efficient changes in your home.
  • If you have kids let them have a sleep over and do fun things with the kids by candle light to help them learn more about the environment. The EPA has a great website for kid activities http://www.epa.gov/kids/index.htm

How to prepare:

  • Shut off all your lights (this is the basic way to celebrate)
  • Unplug all your lights, appliances… everything… yes you will need to re-program your alarm clock, your cable box will take a half an hour to load the guides back into your box, and you will have to climb behind your furniture and move things to do this but this step is what really saves the energy. As you probably know even when your lights and appliances are not on they are still using electricty.

Here is some news about Earth Hour from WWF:

MORE ICONS ANNOUNCE THEY’LL GO DARK: The Pyramids in Egypt, the Acropolis in Athens, the Broadway Theater District, the Space Needle in Seattle, and the Chrysler Building in New York have come on board over the past few days.

TUNE IN TO LARRY KING LIVE: Actor and Earth Hour USA Ambassador Edward Norton will talk with Larry King about Earth Hour this Wednesday, March 25th at 9 pm ET on CNN. Don’t miss it!

Look outside on Saturday night and see how many of your neighbors have their lights out! It would be great if there was more marketing on the environmental organizations part for people to display that they were going to participate ahead of time so that there might be some discussion in your neighborhood about what Earth Hour is.

“Irreversible Climate Change” News?

For those of us who read the news and are passionate about things “green” the headlines today are not so suprising that we are facing the risk of being unable to undo the climate shifts that have been discussed in the scientific world for years and years. While I could easily aregue this is not news I am happy that it is being picked up everywhere from the national and international news to our local news. Below is a good article that sums up what has been happening in Copenhagen the last 3 days.

From the Associated Press: COPENHAGEN – Hundreds of leading climate scientists wrapped up a three-day conference with a warning Thursday that global warming is accelerating beyond the worst predictions and threatening to trigger “irreversible” shifts on the planet.

Attended by some 2,000 experts, the conference aimed at updating the findings of a 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ahead of U.N. talks in December on a new global climate treaty.

“The worst-case IPCC scenario trajectories (or even worse) are being realized,” a team of scientists wrote in a concluding statement. “There is a significant risk that many of the trends will accelerate, leading to an increasing risk of abrupt or irreversible climatic shifts.”

The IPCC predicted a sea level rise of 7 to 23 inches by the end of the century, which could flood low-lying areas and force millions to flee. But more recent research presented at the conference suggested that melting glaciers and ice sheets could help push the sea level up at least 20 inches, and possibly as much as 39 inches.

‘Highly vulnerable’
“Recent observations show that societies are highly vulnerable to even modest levels of climate change with poor nations and communities particularly at risk,” the statement said.

It noted that policy-makers already have a range of tools to mitigate global warming. “But they must be vigorously and widely implemented to achieve the societal transformation required to de-carbonize economies,” it said.

The conclusions of the congress will be presented to politicians when they meet in Copenhagen in December to discuss a new global agreement on greenhouse gas emissions to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.

“We know from scientific evidence that climate change is a reality and that climate change will have damaging effects on the economy all over the world,” said Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, one of the politicians attending the scientific conference. “Therefore we need an agreement and we need an agreement this year.”

Recession an opportunity?
Earlier Thursday, British economist Nicholas Stern, the author of a major British government report detailing the cost of climate change, told the conference that the global recession presents an opportunity to build a more energy-efficient economy.

“Coming out of this we have got to lay the foundations for a low-carbon growth, which is going to be like the railways, like the electricity, like the motorcars, this is going to be over the next two, three decades the big driver in investment,” Stern said.

Stern said green investments make sense because energy-efficient economies will be more sustainable in the future.

“We know from this crisis that if we postpone looking risk in the face, it will bite us much more deeply,” he said.

IKEA’s New Solar Lights

Ikea has now started carrying a line of solar lights. They have lights for both indoor and outdoor use. They are affordable too no lighting option is more than $20.

I particularly like the lanterns, they would be great for the spring and summer parties. Put them out in the morning so they can charge up and then you have lighting for your party. I am definitely going to get some of these lights for my yard this summer!
