What’s in Season

strawberries4-200.jpgBuy a watermelon in winter and you might be unpleasantly surprised at how bad it is… probably because it came from some South American country and was picked two weeks ago. The freshest produce are local and obviously in season. You help the environment by purchasing food that has not traveled a million miles before it gets to you…. the only effort on your part is buying the right produce.

Here is a list of what is generally in season now:

  • Green Beans
  • Peas (most common kinds)
  • Scallions
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce (especially the baby variety)
  • asparagus
  • Artichokes
  • Radishes
  • Cherries
  • New potatoes
  • Strawberries

And if you are in the market for fresh cut flowers

  • Daffodils
  • Tulips
  • Crocuses
  • Other flowers from bulbs are in season

It is obviously tempting to purchase produce in the winter or other times of year that are not the typical time of year for them…. we have all bought beautiful red tomato’s in the dead of winter and yearned for summer but it is best if we buy in season and local! Soon it will be even easier with our local farmers markets.
