Nonprofit Spotlight: Sierra Club

The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 by John Muir.  The Sierra Club’s members and supporters are more than 1.3 million of your friends and neighbors. Inspired by nature, they work to protect our communities and the planet. The Club is America’s oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.

The Sierra Club’s Mission Statement

1. Explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth.
2. Practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources.
3. Educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment.
4. Use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

Through grassroots activism, public education, lobbying and litigation, the Sierra Club works to protect the health of our environment and the preserve our remaining wild places.

Here are just a few of the accomplishments that the Sierra Club has helped bring about:

  • establishment, expansion, and protection many national parks, including significant parts of Yosemite and Yellowstone
  • enactment of the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act
  • national monument status for Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante
  • Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act designating more than 100 million acres of parks, wildlife refuges, and wilderness areas

One of the important points that I think needs to be made about the Sierra Club is that they embrace nature and its preservation but they also want us to enjoy it responsibly. They feel nature is something that we all should enjoy and be a part of.  They have local chapters and groups for people to meet and enjoy nature but also provide local resources to fight to protect it.  They sponsor hiking, biking, and other nature outing that usually do not require membership. For people who can not get out to nature as much as they would like but still want it protected the Sierra Club has many ways to stay informed about public policy issues that are important to the protection of the environment.

The Sierra Club is also involved in endorsing and evaluating political candidates on their position on issues on the environment. A Sierra Club endorsement of a political candidate is one of the best environmental endorsements a candidate can get. But they do not stop at endorsing candidates they also work to educate voters on important environmental issues.
