Why the Earth Needs a Good PR Firm

Lets face it every person who goes through any sort of crisis or is loosing public interest gets a good PR firm to help turn things around. Tiger Woods is rumored to be using Ari Fliescher, former Bush Press Secretary to help put a good spin on the major blows to his reputation (prescription drug abuse, womanizing, cheating… I could go on). Every move he makes is carefully orchestrated, even the first picture taken of him was planned and staged. But Tiger is still in the news, people are still looking forward to his return to golf so really what does this planet need for people to notice it and not turn their back on it?

First, Earth needs to hire a PR firm, one that is so big and famous for getting the people who are unnoticed, noticed again (who works with Betty White?). The economy pushed Earth to the back burner, I am pretty sure more people are interested in the C- celebrities in on Celebrity Fit Club and the nobody’s on American Idol more than what is going on with the planet. A firm that just by taking Earth on as client will get in the news… hmm?!

Second, Earth needs a new spokes person Al Gore is awesome but he does not have a wide enough appeal. There is the option to go with someone unknown, look at what happened when Conan O’Brien picked a random person to follow on Twitter, @lovelybutton, she has 27,950 followers and has been on the news and was invited to Larry King (she was bumped for breaking news). Maybe by taking just a random person and making them the spokesman for the Earth will get it noticed. A baby may be a good option because they have not done anything offensive to the Earth yet to appear to be a hypocrite (but it would have to be a baby that used cloth diapers and drinks out of glass bottles). Maybe there is a celebrity with a good environmental record… lets get that PR firm on that, maybe the clean slate of a baby would work after all.

Third, A good Facebook page and campaign to get fans or friends. Currently, Earth only has 2,285 fans on Facebook and the Devil has 6,077 but Obama has 7,848,841 fans (BTW Betty White has 66,460 fans). Maybe Earth should just start a Farm and play Mafia Wars then lots of people will notice it.

Fourth, hire a developer to create an iPhone and Droid App and it has to be as cool as Google Goggles! I have no idea what it could be, maybe you could take pictures of things and the app would show you what it would look like in 100 or 1,000 years like a plastic water bottle would look exactly the same but a fresh compost heap would turn into a garden of veggies?!

Earth then needs to be in a blockbuster movie that everyone loves, win an Oscar (while being on every best dressed list) and hit the talk show circuit. After the wild ride starts to slow down, there needs to be a book that comes out about the “behind the scenes” (or under the crust) about the tough times Earth had before it got noticed and how it got to be the hot topic it became.

Earth’s current PR strategy of earthquakes, tsunamis, violent rain storms, and dropping feet of snow at a time is not working. PR firms around the world should fight over who will get the credit for turning the Earth around and make it a big star that people want to follow.

Green Celebrities: Honorable Mentions & Hopes For Next Year

I hope that Barack Obama is on my list of green celebrities next year. I hope he is the greenest President we have ever had (that is not that hard).  I hope that he holds true to most of his campaign promises on helping the environment and making America a leader  in green initiatives. I also hope that makes the environment a priority in his policies that enacts.

I hope we can see at least one Governor in our country really make a serious commitment to the environment. A Governor that works to enact laws that promote green choices for residents and business through tax cuts and other incentives.

I would also like to see P Diddy or whatever he calls himself now make some green choices. He recently stopped flying his personal jet because of oil prices (now that they have gone down I am pretty sure he is still flying his plane). You also see him on yachts and all over the world on any given day hosting crazy parties. I am sure he has done some token “green” things but the reality is I doubt he has made any real choices and changes and he would be a great role model to make changes.

Maybe we can get one of the heads of the American car companies on here next year for instituting a major turn around in their busines and providing the American people a good, environmentally friendly, AMERICAN car.

I would be happy to have so many people to choose from next year that I did not know what to do…

Honorable Mentions:

Paul McCartney- he has been a vegetarian for decades. He and his late wife Linda were always leaders in the animal rights and vegetarian lifestyle movement. He even lent his wife’s name to a line of vegetarian meals that can be found in alot of stores.

Brad Pitt- For building green houses in New Orleans. He has always had an intrerest in architecture and he used his interest to make sensible and sustainable houses in the Hurricane ravaged parts of the gulf coast with Make It Right.

Alicia Silverstone- another vegetarian who has been honored by PETA as the vegetarian of the year. She also set up an animal sanctuary and has been driving a hybrid car for years!

As you can see there is room for more people on my list!

Green Celebrities: Al Gore

As the grand finale of this series of posts I thought I would give you the one you all expected from the beginning Al Gore. He is a celebrity not for being a tv or movie star but rather a politician and an activist. He is a Nobel Prize winner (the only one on the list), author, award winning star/producer of one of the leading movies about the environment, and pioneer in other ways we can make a change in the environment. Below is a list of several of his accomplishments and I think alot of you might be suprised to know what he is involved in.

An Inconvient Truth is a documentary that came out in 2006 which basically went in depth outlining the effects global warming will have on our environment and how it will affect our world. The movie won rave reviews from both the movie world and the political world. The format was innovative, it is basically Al Gore making a presentation with various interviews and news clips edited throughout. It presents amazing facts of what has happened and scary predictions for the future if things continue the way they are. The movie has continued to live on to be an educational tool for businesses and even children in school.

The Climate Project consists of 2,500 dedicated volunteers from throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Spain, and the UK, all personally trained by Al Gore to educate the public about climate change. TCP presenters have reached a combined 4 million people worldwide. The goal of the organization is that by raising the awareness of our fellow citizens about this crisis and informing them about potential solutions, all of us, together, can preserve the climate balance on which humanity and our planet depend. The group started in June of 2006 with 1,00 volunteers that were trained to  give the slide show that is featured in an Inconvenient Truth. By the end of last year they have already made 20,000 presentations with an estimated total audience of over 2 million people.

Gore shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his efforts “to disseminate knowledge about man-made climate change.” The Nobel committee cited Gore as “the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted” to halt global warming. Gore shared the prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a United Nations (UN) agency comprising more than 2,000 climate scientists and experts. The Nobel committee has increasingly focused on environmental issues in awarding the Peace Prize because the exploitation and control of natural resources, such as petroleum and freshwater, have become conflict issues, as well. The committee noted that global warming “may induce large-scale migration and lead to greater competition for Earth’s resources.” Gore donated his half of the Nobel prize money to the Alliance for Climate Protection.  (from Encarta Online)

Current TV is a tv station that started in 2005 with viewer submitted videos on all day. The Current TV website descrbes that channel as the: “world’s leading peer-to-peer news and information network. Current is the only 24/7 cable and satellite television network and Internet site produced and programmed in collaboration with its audience. Current connects young adults with what is going on in their world, from their perspective, in their own voices.” But it is much more than a You Tube for tv. I have spent a good amount of time watching this channel and there are several thought provoking segments that are about more than just the environment. It is an innovative idea and I have to say I am not surprised that Al Gore is involved in it.

Al Gore was also instrumental in organizing and promoting the Live Earth worldwide concert to increase awareness about global warming. He is also Chairman of Generation Investment Management. Generation’s mission is:

  • Deliver superior investment performance by taking a long term investment view and integrating sustainability research within a rigorous fundamental equity analysis framework.
  • Create long term client partnerships by delivering unique investment insights and exceptional client service.
  • Attract, retain and develop the best professionals within a passionate investment culture through a commitment to Our Values.

The Generation Investment Management offices are also located in some of the most environmentally state of the art buildings. They have offices in New York (that they are moving into very soon) and London both of which are certified by their countries leading environmental standards (Platinum LEED in NY and Excellent BREEAM in London). They do not stop at the construction of their offices but they are also committed to being carbon neutral through purchasing off sets for both business operations AND the personal actions of employees and their families.

Al Gore has set an amazing example of how to get the word out about an important issue and use the resources available to him to get people to act.
